Society – Research with Responsibility and Impact

At IFW Dresden, we believe that excellent research gains its true value when it resonates beyond the laboratory and contributes to society. With our commitment to knowledge transfer, we connect cutting-edge materials research to public life – from schools and museums to industry and international collaborations.

Science in Dialogue with Society

Through responsible research, knowledge transfer, and public engagement, IFW Dresden builds bridges between science and society. Our mission: to make research impactful and inspiring – for today and for the future.

Kleine Keime der Wissenschaft

Kleine Keime der Wissenschaft

With this project, we are promoting gender-equitable STEM education in our partner school in the city of Dresden. A group of scientists brings various experiments directly into the classroom. The children become little researchers themselves: They learn how to HANDLE experiments, understand and thus learn scientific contexts in a playful way. The program is usually carried out in grades 2 and 3.

Educational Program: Girls’Day

Educational Program: Girls’Day

Empowering the next generation: on Girls’Day, schoolgirls gain first-hand insights into professions in science and technology that are still largely male-dominated. At IFW Dresden, our program “Frauenpower für die Forschung” invites participants to explore the fascinating world of materials research, discover career opportunities, and meet female role models in science.

Educational Program: JUNIORDOCTOR

Educational Program: JUNIORDOCTOR

The JUNIORDOCTOR program introduces students from grades 3 to 12 to the exciting world of research, technology, politics, and culture in Dresden. As part of this city-wide initiative, IFW Dresden opens its doors to young explorers, giving them a first-hand impression of our work in materials science. Students learn what can be discovered and researched at our institute – from quantum effects to innovative materials for the future.

Public Events: Long Night of Science

Public Events: Long Night of Science

Every year, during the “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften” (Long Night of Science), IFW Dresden opens its laboratories to the public. Thousands of visitors experience hands-on demonstrations, talks, and experiments – making cutting-edge materials science tangible and inspiring.

Educational Visits: For Students

Educational Visits: For Students

We offer guided tours tailored to school curricula, ideal for supplementing physics and chemistry lessons from grade 10 onward. Topics include magnetism, superconductivity, electron microscopy, and new carbon materials. Duration: approx. 90 minutes.
